2000-2007: Le Voyage & Crossing Borders
With this body of work, Paul Harmon has managed to cross the bold linear borders that define shapes, but in doing so, things change. Colors change hue, black turns white, flat surfaces become modeled, gray becomes color, monochromatic morphs to multicolor.
In crossing these borders, the artist calls upon the widest variety of painting techniques, all within a single canvas. One’s eye can travel from pointillism to toneless flat surfaces, to mosaic effects and to painterly modeling. Tools range from brush to palette knife to stencil. All of this is contained and controlled by the force of Paul Harmon’s bold lines. The result is contrast and never a dull moment.
“After all,” Harmon has stated, “life changes as we cross various borders, be it with a visa or in other transitions such as youth to adult, marriage, career change or newly arrived at philosophies.”
